Recently, the use of natural products to treat a number of diseases and conditions has been emphasized. There are various types of natural products used for biomedical purposes. One of these products is propolis, the most famous bee product. It is a yellowish and brown resin material that has significant antimicrobial, anticancer, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It is not surprising that it is precisely for all these reasons that propolis has gained the attention of a large number of researchers looking into its further development and application for dental purposes. Propolis is, in fact, a natural antibiotic.
Dental caries is caused by bacteria that accumulate on the surface of a tooth and cause dental plaque. If left untreated, they can destroy tooth enamel and cause a number of problems, including tooth loss or serious infection.

Proper oral hygiene, the use of products containing fluorine and regular visits to the dentist can prevent and control the formation of caries. However, we must not forget about the potent propolis. Studies have shown that propolis contains more than 160 different compounds, and more than half of them are classified as flavonoids, which are known to have antimicrobial effects. The fatty acids in propolis have a low level of microorganism tolerance and slow acid production.

Propolis and periodontology

The various different effects of propolis on oral health have led to its use in the case of periodontal disease, as well. When used on so-called periodontal pockets, it prevents the action of bacteria that fight the body’s defense system. Then, propolis systematically prevents further loss of bone mass in periodontal disease.
Propolis is also ideal as an alternative but natural treatment in the fight against oral infections.

Mouthwash with propolis extract

Mouthwashes are used as commercial antiseptics and as home remedies for better oral hygiene. They can be purely cosmetic but can also have a therapeutic purpose. The latter reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth, act against plaque formation, help with gingivitis, etc.

However, studies involving humans have shown that mouthwash containing propolis extract significantly reduces the concentration of bacteria in saliva and is more effective than ordinary mouthwashes available for purchase. Also, the positive properties of propolis help the prevention of caries.
Given the large number of useful substances found in propolis, it is also ideal for the treatment of the oral cavity in case of wounds, i.e., after tooth extraction.
Propolis in toothpaste has significantly improved oral health and showed an inhibitory effect on the formation of dental plaque, which is considered one of the main causes of numerous dental health conditions.
